Commercial Heating with LPG Gas

LPG gas is an extremely efficient method of Commercial Heating, with little energy loss from its production or use.

You simply turn it on and it flows at a temperature you can control almost instantaneously.

There are no peak and off-peak pricing levels to worry about either.

Heating System Types

♦ Direct-fired convective systems pass 100% of outside air over a burner that heats the air and discharges it into the factory space, while indirect-fired systems re-circulate 100% of space heated air.

♦ Convective system utilises roof-mounted fan forced heat exchangers that are supplied with steam or very hot water.

♦ Radiant heating systems rely on infrared radiation to heat objects, people and surfaces.

♦ Radiant units are for open areas with high ceilings and in locations where chill temperatures are to be eliminated.

♦ Spot heating radiant units are also available.

♦ In many industrial installations, a convective and a radiant system are used in tandem to create an efficient form of total space heating.

Your Elgas representative is the person best qualified to assess your space heating needs and recommend the appropriate system.

Helium Gas Tank - Cylinder Sizes

Helium gas is available in G2, E2 and D2 gas cylinder sizes.

All cylinders are designed for transport.

Recommended Helium Gas Cylinder Sizes

D2 cylinder is recommended for a small function needing to inflate approximately 140 standard size party balloons

E2 cylinder is recommended for the small to medium size functions needing to inflate approximately 300 standard size party balloons

G2 cylinder is recommended for the large functions needing to inflate approximately 750 standard size party balloons

All cylinders are designed for transport

Who Discovered Helium?

The following is a timeline of the major events in the history of helium:

  • 1868 – Theoretical evidence of the existence of Helium was based the discovery of a bright yellow spectral line (at 587.49 nanometers) from a prism of sunlight.  The discovery was made by Pierre Jules César Janssen, a French astronomer, during a solar eclipse.

  • 1868 – Joseph Norman Lockyer named it Helium, after the Greek sun god – Helios.

  • 1882 – Helium was first observed on Earth by Italian physicist Luigi Palmieri, whilst analysing lava from a volcano.

  • 1895 – Actual helium gas was isolated by Sir William Ramsay, a Scottish chemist, by treating cleveite with acids.

  • 1903 – Significant quantities of helium were found in particular natural gas fields within the USA.

  • 1908 – Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was the first to liquefy helium.

What is Helium Used For?

Here are some of the most notable uses for helium:

  • Filling of decorative balloons is probably the best known and most common use.

  • It is used to provide lift in Lighter-Than-Air ships – blimps and dirigibles – based on its extremely low density compared to air.

  • It is used as a cooling agent in scientific devices such as the Large Hadron Collider, MRI scanners and NMR spectrometers, as well as being used as a carrier gas for gas chromatography.

  • Helium is very inert.  This lends itself to use as a protective atmosphere for a number of processes including welding and semiconductor production.

  • Deep sea divers use a mixture of 80% helium and 20% oxygen.  This eliminates nitrogen, which normally makes up 80% of the air we breathe, reducing nitrogen narcosis and other adverse physiological effects.

  • Liquid helium is used to promote superconductivity in certain metals

Helium Facts

  • Helium is a colourless, odourless and non-toxic gas

  • Boiling point: −268.9°C or −452.1°F.  This makes it the lowest condensation temperature of any known substance.

  • Helium is the only element that remains liquid down to absolute zero (0°K) at 1 atm.

  • Helium vapour and liquid both have very low viscosity.  This is why helium leaks out of an apparently sealed balloon.

  • Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe

Where is Helium Found and How is it Produced?

Most helium is obtained as a by-product of natural gas from only certain locations, most notably in the USA.  It can be as much as 7%.

Helium is extracted by a process called fractional distillation, which uses very low temperature to separate the gases.

The helium is then purified using activated charcoal.

Finally, helium is liquefied cryogenically so that it can be transported on an economical basis.

Helium Balloon Gas Safety: Don’t Be a Daffy Duck

Use helium balloon gas safely

There is a well-known party trick where people suck gas out of helium balloons to talk funny.

The amusement of talking like Donald Duck is overshadowed by the dangers involved with inhaling helium balloon gas.

It’s not only ‘daffy’... It can even be fatal!

Why Does Helium Make You Sound Funny?

When you speak, you rely on your vocal chords to make the sounds. The air passing through your larynx causes the vocal chords to vibrate. The mouth, lips and tongue then convert the sound into speech.

When you inhale helium, it affects the timbre of your voice, because helium is much less dense than air. This is a result of sound travelling faster through helium than air, as well as helium favouring high pitched sounds.

Danger of Asphyxiation

Helium is not poisonous, as it is an inert gas. However, it can be an asphyxiant when inhaled instead of normal air. This is known as Inert Gas Asphyxiation

Breathing just helium, or any inert gas, creates an absence of oxygen. The helium displaces the air, including the required oxygen, in your lungs. This can cause your body’s oxygen level to drop to hazardously low levels, initiating Hypoxia.

Symptoms of Hypoxia

The resulting Hypoxia is a condition that develops when the body is deprived of an adequate supply of oxygen. Generalised hypoxia can cause dizziness, disorientation, abnormal heart function, unconsciousness and even death.

Risk of an Embolism or Ruptured Lung

Inhaling helium too deeply or directly from a gas cylinder is even more dangerous. The pressurised gas can cause an embolism. An embolism is a blockage of a blood vessel which, in this case, is caused by a gas bubble. This can cause a stroke, seizures or death.

The inhalation of pressurised gas can also damage the lungs. Air sacs in the lungs are likely to rupture and death follows almost immediately, as victims literally drown in their own blood.

Be Safe with Helium Balloon Gas

Don’t be a daffy duck!  Here are some safety tips to keep you, your family and friends safe:

  • Don’t inhale helium balloon gas.  The risks far outweigh the momentary amusement.

  • Share the Be Gas Wise web site with your family and friends on Facebook or let everyone know on Twitter:

#begaswise

  • Ensure helium balloon gas and other gases are only used for their intended purposes.

  • Always follow the safety warnings.

  • Make sure children are always supervised when playing with balloons.

  • Click to download the PDF of MSDS Helium (Balloon Gas)

Don't Release Helium Balloons Outdoors

Releasing balloons may seems harmless except balloons do eventually come back down to earth and can cause environmental damage. Released balloons pose a danger to wildlife and especially marine wildlife.

Releasing balloons may also be illegal, depending on where you live. For example, in NSW it is against the law to release 20 or more balloons.

Video & Conclusion

Elgas and the balloon industry are deeply concerned about the misuse of helium balloon gas. We want to ensure that customers, their family and friends are all educated to understand the dangers and how to safely enjoy helium balloons

To help educate Australians, BOC, with the support of Elgas, has produced the following community service announcement. Voiced by iconic Australian actor Michael Caton, the video depicts a family setting up for a children’s party.

“We’ve all seen this at one time or another, some of us may even have done it ourselves, but inhaling balloon gas is very dangerous and can be fatal,’’ Mr Caton says in the announcement. “The helium in balloon gas acts as an asphyxiant and when you inhale it displaces the oxygen in your lungs. Balloon gas is safe in balloons and when you release it in a well-ventilated area and in a safe manner. So the next time you see some sucker about to inhale balloon gas or you think it is going to be a laugh, stop and be gas wise,’’ he says.

You will most likely see it on TV over the coming months. Many thanks to Michael Caton for once again agreeing to be our ‘voice talent’ on this, as well as our previous BBQ Safety community service announcement. Finally, kudos to our friends at BOC for creating the 'Be Gas Wise' safety campaign.

Do not inhale balloon helium.

Helium does not support life. Inhaling helium can lead to suffocation or even death.Cylinders must be stored below 55ºC, in a naturally ventilated areas constructed of non-combustible material with a firm level floor, away from areas of high traffic and emergency exits.

Read all instructions and warnings on the cylinder, cylinder tag, packaging and leaflets to ensure optimum results and your safety.

If users have further questions supplier can be contacted.

Ensure that safe handling procedures are followed at all times.

Store cylinders in an upright position and secure properly to prevent toppling.

Safety stands; braces, trolleys, straps and other purpose designed cylinder safety equipment can be purchased from many industry suppliers, as well as Elgas.

Regulators should not be attached to the cylinder during transport.

Cylinders must be secured during transport.

Always store and transport cylinders in a well-ventilated area away from obvious fire risks.

Do not bend and lift cylinders.

Use a trolley to move cylinders.

Helium inhalation is no laughing matter

CautionBalloons at parties are to be enjoyed but customers should be warned that an attempt to sound like a cartoon character can be fatal. When inhaled, balloon gas displaces air in the lungs in the way similar to water when a person drowns.

Inhaling balloon gas cuts off oxygen supply to the body. Without oxygen it only takes a few seconds before an individual can become dizzy or unconscious and can stop breathing.

Inhaling balloon gas under pressure straight from the cylinder is even more dangerous. Air sacs in the lungs are likely to rupture and death follows almost immediately, as victims literally drown in their own blood.

Elgas and the balloon industry are deeply concerned about the misuse of Balloon Gas.

Ensure that customers are advised to educate family and friends to understand the dangers.

Ensure that customers are also advised to always supervise children and teenagers.

Don't Pick the Wrong Type of Forklift

If your business uses forklifts, it is important to pick the right type.

There are three primary options: LPG Gas, Diesel and Electric.

The following is a review, by type, to help you make an informed decision when acquiring new or additional forklifts for your business.

LPG Gas Forklifts

LPG forklifts are capable of maintaining 100% power throughout the day.

They have the ability to push heavy loads at full capacity, up and down gradients faster and for a longer amount of time than electric forklifts.

The initial capital cost is generally lower when compared with either electric or diesel forklifts

LPG forklifts can also be used both indoors and outdoors, unlike their electric and diesel counterparts.

This increased flexibility is essential if your business has both yard and warehouse storage applications.

Indoor workspaces should be ventilated

The time required to refuel an LPG forklift is much less when compared to electric powered forklifts.

It takes only five minutes to refill or change an LPG cylinder.

In contrast, an electric forklift could take up to eight hours to recharge.

So, you have no down time or the added cost of acquiring extra batteries.

Finally, an LPG cylinder storage cage or LPG refuelling station saves valuable indoor storage space, when compared to an electric recharge station, as the LPG is stored outdoors.

Cylinder storage cages are typically provided by your forklift gas supplier.

Electric Forklifts

Battery-operated electric forklifts do not produce tailpipe emissions and are quiet in use.

Food processing companies sometimes prefer electric forklifts because they produce no fumes.

While good for indoor use, they are generally unsuitable for outdoor applications.

While electric forklifts are ‘greener’ on site, most of the Australian electricity used for the recharging comes from coal fired generating facilities.

So, the resultant greenhouse gas emissions are based on this use of coal.

Electric forklifts must have a charged battery to operate.

Forgetting to charge the battery overnight could result in significant productivity losses the next day, particularly when the business operates with one or a limited number of forklifts.

Also, while a battery is charging, the forklift is unavailable for use, unless you invest in a unit with easily changeable batteries and the spare battery packs.

Charging typically takes 8 hours, although some units do charge faster.

Due to battery and recharging requirements, the initial investment for an electric forklift is usually much higher than the other options.

In addition, chargers have certain voltage and amperage requirements.

Your existing electrical service may not meet these requirements, necessitating additional expense to remedy.

In addition, the battery charging station takes up valuable warehouse space, including the ‘parking spaces’ required for the forklifts while charging.

Diesel Forklifts

Because these are internal combustion engines, which create exhaust fumes and diesel particulate matter, this option is not safe for indoor use.

The cost of acquisition for diesel forklifts is generally higher than LPG but lower than electric models.

Diesel forklifts require more space to manoeuvre than the LPG or electric alternatives, since these units are larger in size.

However, diesel models generally provide more torque output than the alternatives.

Diesel models are good for sustained heavy loads.

One worrisome aspect of diesel forklifts is the operator health issue.

The dirty black smoke that is seen coming from diesel vehicles is a fine particulate matter which is carcinogenic.

Experts at the World Health Organisation (WHO) say diesel engine exhaust fumes can cause cancer in humans.

While this may not be much of an issue with truck drivers, who sit in an enclosed cab, forklift operators are in close proximity to the exhaust.

LPG Gas Cooking for the Hospitality Industry

With the escalating cost of electricity, it's worth exploring cooking with LPG.

LPG can also power your hot water and room heaters.

A dedicated delivery driver monitors your usage to ensure there's always sufficient LPG.

Cook with Gas No Matter Where You Work

Almost every professional chef wants to cook with a gas cooktop.

Now you can!

LPG Everywhere

But how can you get gas cooking if you work in an area without natural gas supply?

LPG gas is the answer.

LPG gas is available virtually anywhere in Australia and adding it to your business is easier than you think.

Gas - The Better Way to Cook

Cooking with gas is so much better than using a traditional electric cooktop.

Gas provides heat more rapidly and evenly, as the flame wraps around the pan.

Temperature control is instantaneous, so you don’t have to move a pot off the burner to stop cooking.

Be able to cook a real stir fry in a proper wok, with a gas wok burner.

Easy to Install

Gas cooktops can be fitted into the same space as your old electric unit.

You just measure your current space and select a gas cooktop that is the same size.

Cook with Gas at an Affordable Price

Best of all, cooking with LPG gas is very affordable.

There are quality gas cooktops available with a premium stainless steel finish, wok burner and electronic ignition, so no wasted gas on pilot lights.

LPG gas is very affordable, too.

Liquid vs Vapour LPG

LPG exists in two different forms, liquid and gas (vapour).

The pressure and temperature at which it is stored determines which kind you have.

Same but Different

Propane molecule modelIn Australia, LPG is Propane.
Propane is the gas that is supplied to virtually all homes and most businesses that purchase LPG in Australia.

Propane is a flammable hydrocarbon gas with 3 carbon and 8 hydrogen atoms in a propane molecule.

The chemical formula for propane is C3H8(Propane molecule model shown)

LPG liquid and vapour characteristics have some similarities to water and steam.

Liquid LPG is colder, denser and heavier.

LPG vapour is warmer and much lighter.

Liquid LPG and vapour LPG both have applications but are not interchangeable when used.

The choice depends on the purpose.

In most applications, such as home appliances, LPG is used as vapour (gas).

However, some LPG fuelled products require it to be in its liquid form, such as with autogas LPG liquid injection systems.

Different Cylinders

45kg vapour cylindersLPG is liquid in a cylinder with an area at the top of the cylinder where it turns into vapour.

However, the cylinders come in two configurations, Liquid Withdrawal and Vapour Withdrawal

The difference depends on from where the LPG is extracted.

If drawn from the bottom of the cylinder, it comes out as liquid.

If drawn from the top of the cylinder, it exits as vapour.

The cylinders are clearly marked as either “Vapour Withdrawal” or “Liquid Withdrawal”.

In Australia, liquid withdrawal cylinders are also painted with a Blue top, to make them instantly recognisable.

Using the wrong type of cylinder for an application could pose a serious safety hazard.

LPG as a Liquid

Water boils at 100°C, becoming a gas (steam).  In contrast, LPG boils at -42°C becoming gas vapour.

It stays liquid because it is under pressure in a gas cylinder.

As a liquid, it looks a lot like water.

It is colourless and odourless in its natural state.

Unlike water, 1 kilogram of LPG does NOT equal 1 litre of liquid LPG. LPG density or specific gravity is about half that of water, at 0.51.

In Australia, where LPG is propane, 1kg of LPG has a volume of 1.96L.

Conversely, 1L of LPG weighs 0.51kg.

The distinctive smell of LPG comes from an odorant that is added to LPG, for safety and leak detection reasons.

Caution should always be used to avoid direct exposure, as liquid LPG is cold enough to cause severe cold burns on exposed skin.

LPG as a Vapour

Gaseous expansion of LPGLPG becomes vapour at temperatures of -42°C and above.

LPG expands to 270 times the volume when it goes from liquid to gas.

So, 1L of liquid LPG equals 270L of gaseous LPG.

As there are 1000L in a cubic meter (M3), 1L of liquid LPG expands to 0.27M3.

The lower and upper limits of flammability are the percentages of LPG that must be present in an LPG/air mixture.

This means that between 2.15% and 9.6% of the total LPG/air mixture must be LPG in order for it to be combustible.

LPG gas vapour is heavier than air and will sink to and collect at the lowest point.

If LPG is vented to the outside air, it will quickly dissipate with the slightest movement of air.

Conversely, if LPG is vented into a sealed structure, with no air movement, the LPG gas will collect on the floor and rise vertically as more LPG is vented into the structure.

Obviously, this would create an extremely hazardous situation.

Know the Difference for Safety

As previously mentioned, most LPG applications use vapour.

Appliances such as water heaters, room heaters and cookers all use vapour.

If these appliances were to have liquid LPG flow to their burners, the result could possibly be a fire or similar safety hazard.

This is why you must use the right type of cylinders and LPG cylinders should always be kept upright, so that only vapour is released.

An upside-down vapour cylinder, or even one laying on its side, could release the LPG as a liquid.

Bulk LNG Suppliers - LNG Delivery & Storage - Australia

Bulk LNG for Australian Business

Elgas supplies bulk LNG in the eastern states and Tasmania.

It is a versatile energy source with stable pricing.

What is LNG?

LNG, or Liquefied Natural Gas, is simply natural gas in a liquid form

It is the same natural gas that millions of Australian homeowners and businesses use every day.

Put simply, LNG is Natural Gas Made Portable™.

How is LNG Stored & Delivered?

LNG provides the opportunity to economically transport and store natural gas.

It is stored as a liquid until it is needed, at which point it is returned to its gaseous state.

The LNG is delivered in special cryogenic trucks.

Switching to LNG

Switching to LNG is very economically attractive project if your current minimum consumption is 1 tonne or 50GJ per day or more.

LNG price stability is also quite favourable, with long term supply agreements available.

LNG Application Projects

RoadTransport

LNG as an alternative fuel to diesel for road transportation has been in development in Australia since 2001.

Over 200 heavy duty vehicles are now in daily operation.

Power Generation

LNG is a suitable alternative to diesel for the remote power generation market.

These remote power generating plants provide electricity for towns or mine sites and can vary in size from 1 MW to 50MW.

Mining and Industrial

Mining and industrial markets have considerable potential employ LNG into their operations.

Large quantities of diesel are consumed by mining vehicles, making them the perfect application for LNG substitution.

Railroads

Rail is also a potential LNG application.

LNG to replace diesel for locomotives has increased substantially in the past few years and LNG powered locomotives are already in use in other countries.

Ships

Ships with short repetitive routes are also a viable LNG use.

Ferries are a prime example of this application.
