LPG Gas Hot Water Systems for Dairy Farms

Why should dairy farmers use gas hot water systems?

Dairy farmers use gas hot water systems because they are continuous flow, highly efficient and very cost effective.

The Gas Hot Water Advantages

Dairy farmers need a reliable supply of hot waterThe difference is that the farm no longer needs to store hot water in preparation for use.

You avoid the heat loss associated with storing water and the constant power use required to maintain the heated water for when it’s needed.

Your Dairy Gas Hot Water plant will be engineered, specified and installed to meet your specific needs.

Multiple units can be assembled together, using a manifold system, to scale the output to the quantity required.

Liquid vs Vapour LPG

LPG exists in two different forms, liquid and gas (vapour).

The pressure and temperature at which it is stored determines which kind you have.

Same but Different

Propane molecule modelIn Australia, LPG is Propane.
Propane is the gas that is supplied to virtually all homes and most businesses that purchase LPG in Australia.

Propane is a flammable hydrocarbon gas with 3 carbon and 8 hydrogen atoms in a propane molecule.

The chemical formula for propane is C3H8(Propane molecule model shown)

LPG liquid and vapour characteristics have some similarities to water and steam.

Liquid LPG is colder, denser and heavier.

LPG vapour is warmer and much lighter.

Liquid LPG and vapour LPG both have applications but are not interchangeable when used.

The choice depends on the purpose.

In most applications, such as home appliances, LPG is used as vapour (gas).

However, some LPG fuelled products require it to be in its liquid form, such as with autogas LPG liquid injection systems.

Different Cylinders

45kg vapour cylindersLPG is liquid in a cylinder with an area at the top of the cylinder where it turns into vapour.

However, the cylinders come in two configurations, Liquid Withdrawal and Vapour Withdrawal

The difference depends on from where the LPG is extracted.

If drawn from the bottom of the cylinder, it comes out as liquid.

If drawn from the top of the cylinder, it exits as vapour.

The cylinders are clearly marked as either “Vapour Withdrawal” or “Liquid Withdrawal”.

In Australia, liquid withdrawal cylinders are also painted with a Blue top, to make them instantly recognisable.

Using the wrong type of cylinder for an application could pose a serious safety hazard.

LPG as a Liquid

Water boils at 100°C, becoming a gas (steam).  In contrast, LPG boils at -42°C becoming gas vapour.

It stays liquid because it is under pressure in a gas cylinder.

As a liquid, it looks a lot like water.

It is colourless and odourless in its natural state.

Unlike water, 1 kilogram of LPG does NOT equal 1 litre of liquid LPG. LPG density or specific gravity is about half that of water, at 0.51.

In Australia, where LPG is propane, 1kg of LPG has a volume of 1.96L.

Conversely, 1L of LPG weighs 0.51kg.

The distinctive smell of LPG comes from an odorant that is added to LPG, for safety and leak detection reasons.

Caution should always be used to avoid direct exposure, as liquid LPG is cold enough to cause severe cold burns on exposed skin.

LPG as a Vapour

Gaseous expansion of LPGLPG becomes vapour at temperatures of -42°C and above.

LPG expands to 270 times the volume when it goes from liquid to gas.

So, 1L of liquid LPG equals 270L of gaseous LPG.

As there are 1000L in a cubic meter (M3), 1L of liquid LPG expands to 0.27M3.

The lower and upper limits of flammability are the percentages of LPG that must be present in an LPG/air mixture.

This means that between 2.15% and 9.6% of the total LPG/air mixture must be LPG in order for it to be combustible.

LPG gas vapour is heavier than air and will sink to and collect at the lowest point.

If LPG is vented to the outside air, it will quickly dissipate with the slightest movement of air.

Conversely, if LPG is vented into a sealed structure, with no air movement, the LPG gas will collect on the floor and rise vertically as more LPG is vented into the structure.

Obviously, this would create an extremely hazardous situation.

Know the Difference for Safety

As previously mentioned, most LPG applications use vapour.

Appliances such as water heaters, room heaters and cookers all use vapour.

If these appliances were to have liquid LPG flow to their burners, the result could possibly be a fire or similar safety hazard.

This is why you must use the right type of cylinders and LPG cylinders should always be kept upright, so that only vapour is released.

An upside-down vapour cylinder, or even one laying on its side, could release the LPG as a liquid.

Elgas supplies bulk LNG in the eastern states and Tasmania.

It is a versatile energy source with stable pricing.

What is LNG?

Elgas LNG logo

LNG, or Liquefied Natural Gas, is simply natural gas in a liquid form.

It is the same natural gas that millions of Australian homeowners and businesses use every day.

Put simply, LNG is Natural Gas Made Portable™.

How is LNG Stored & Delivered?

LNG provides the opportunity to economically transport and store natural gas.

It is stored as a liquid until it is needed, at which point it is returned to its gaseous state.

The LNG is delivered in special cryogenic trucks.

Switching to LNG

Switching to LNG is very economically attractive project if your current minimum consumption is 1 tonne or 50GJ per day or more.

LNG price stability is also quite favourable, with long term supply agreements available.

LNG Application Projects

RoadTransport

LNG as an alternative fuel to diesel for road transportation has been in development in Australia since 2001.

Over 200 heavy duty vehicles are now in daily operation.

Power Generation

LNG is a suitable alternative to diesel for the remote power generation market.

These remote power generating plants provide electricity for towns or mine sites and can vary in size from 1 MW to 50MW.

Mining and Industrial

Mining and industrial markets have considerable potential employ LNG into their operations.

Large quantities of diesel are consumed by mining vehicles, making them the perfect application for LNG substitution.

Railroads

Rail is also a potential LNG application.

LNG to replace diesel for locomotives has increased substantially in the past few years and LNG powered locomotives are already in use in other countries.

Ships

Ships with short repetitive routes are also a viable LNG use.

Ferries are a prime example of this application.

Natural Gas - Virtual Pipeline Supply

Substitutes for Shortages - Synthetic Natural Gas or LNG

With the looming potential for natural gas shortages and price escalations, large natural gas users need to examine their alternatives.

Many commercial users have more option than they realise…

Solutions for Natural Gas Shortages & Rising Prices

There are a number of strategies that might be used to combat natural gas shortages and price escalations…

Peak Shaving

To help meet peak demand, when natural gas supplies are inadequate, use a ‘virtual pipeline’.

This is the augmentation of natural gas pipeline supplies with liquefied natural gas or simulated natural gas.

Peak shaving systems are activated, as needed, to cope with times of peak demand and avoid any possible overrun penalty fees.

Base Load Gas

Virtual pipeline options can provide gas to users in isolated areas where natural gas is currently not available due to a lack of infrastructure or natural gas resources.

Bridging Fuel

Providing options to operate while in preparation for the start-up of a natural gas supply.

Either liquefied natural gas or simulated natural gas can be used as a ‘bridge fuel’ in anticipation of natural gas availability.

Stand-By Natural Gas

Providing alternatives as a stand-by in the event of a natural gas supply disruption.

Allowing customers to maintain gas related operations in the event of a natural gas limitation or temporary stoppage of supply.

Interruptible Gas Service

In some areas, a user may be able to get substantial discounts for accepting interruptible service.

Virtual pipeline solutions allow for this option and the resultant savings without actually suffering the interruptions.

Virtual Pipeline for Natural Gas

There are two very practical virtual pipeline solutions – liquefied natural gas and simulated natural gas.

Both can provide natural gas equivalents in situations where there are natural gas shortages or even when there are no natural gas pipelines in place.

Liquefied Natural Gas – LNG

LNG is liquefied natural gas - methaneThe first virtual pipeline solution is LNG.

Most people hear LNG mentioned and think of exports on large ships.

However, LNG can also be deliver, within Australia, using special cryogenic road tankers.

As a liquid, the volume of the LNG reduces to 1/600 its gaseous volume.

This makes transport, in the cryogenic tankers, economically viable.

LNG – liquefied natural gas – is methane (CH4) that is liquefied by chilling below -161°C.

The LNG is typically stored in vertical tanks, as shown.

When required for use, LNG is warmed back to natural gas in a process known as regasification.

This regasification is achieved using a method involving heat exchangers the two large grey units in accompanying picture.

After regasification, it reverts to and is used as natural gas.

This the same natural gas that is piped to homes and businesses around the country.

Get a fast online commercial gas quotation

Simulated Natural Gas

Large Simulated Natural Gas facilityThe second virtual pipeline solution is simulated natural gas.

Simulated natural gas has a number of names.

In addition to SNG, it is also called propane-air and LPG-air.

In some coutries it is also called Synthetic Natural Gas or Substitute Natural Gas, although this is not techniclly correct for Australia.

Simulated Natural Gas – SNG – is produced by mixing vaporised LPG with compressed air.

The accompanying picture shows a large SNG facility.

The LPG is delivered via normal LPG road tankers and stored in conventional LPG tanks.

To start the process, the LPG (propane) is vaporised from liquid LPG.

Depending on the size of the storage vessels and the rate of consumption, this may require the use of a vaporiser.

The vaporised LPG is then fed into an SNG processor, mixing the LPG with compressed air.

The typical blend is 53% vaporised LPG (propane) and 47% air.

From there, the gas proceeds directly to the users' applications.

SNG can be used in place of natural gas, as it has virtually identical combustion characteristics.

It can be used alone or mixed with regular natural gas.

No changes are required in burners, regulators or gas jets.

Oxy Acetylene Bottles - Welding Gas Supplier

Acetylene gas is available in G and E cylinder sizes.

Oxygen is available in G2 and E2 cylinder sizes.

Acetylene Welding Gas

acetylene gas bottleA low auto-ignition temperature of acetylene means that minimal energy is required to ignite acetylene in air or oxygen.

Highly reactive, acetylene is dissolved in acetone and contained within a porous mass inside the cylinder.

Common applications include:

Cutting

Brazing

Heating

Flame hardening - an oxy acetylene flame can be used where the hardened surface of carbon steel components is either in-situ, as a remedial process, or on components too large to fit in a furnace

Flame cleaning - a broad oxy acetylene flame is held close to a steel surface for cleaning

Thermal spraying of various metals and ceramics. The material to be sprayed is fed through the flame.

Oxygen Welding Gas

oxygen gas bottleOxygen is typically supplied with a purity of 99.5% or higher.

Oxygen is colourless, odourless, does not burn, but does support and accelerate combustion.

Common applications include:

Used with a fuel gas for cutting, welding, brazing and soldering.

The use of oxygen gives higher flame temperatures than if air is used.

In plasma and laser cutting steel, an arc or a laser beam is used to heat the steel to its ignition temperature.

Oxygen is then used in the same way as with oxygen cutting to create an exothermic reaction and to blow away any metal oxide or slag.

Thermal lancing oxygen is used in conjunction with the steel lance to create a high temperature melting process capable of drilling or cutting through materials such as concrete, brick, stone and most metals.

Used as an assist gas in lasers for cutting mild steel.

Who Discovered Acetylene?

The following is a brief timeline of the history of acetylene:

1836 – Acetylene (C2H2) discovered by English chemist Edmund Davy.  He discovered it accidentally whist experimenting with potassium.  He produced potassium carbide - K2C2 - which reacted with water to release acetylene.  He thought it would be used as an illuminating gas.

1860 - Acetylene was rediscovered by Marcellin Berthelot, French chemist.   He named it “acétylène".  He also discovered a number of different ways to produce acetylene.

1950s – Acetylene manufactured by the partial combustion of methane (natural gas) or as a by-product in the ethylene stream from hydrocarbon cracking.

What is Acetylene Used For?

Here are some of the most notable uses for acetylene:

  • As an industrial gas for oxyacetylene gas welding and cutting
  • Used for lighting purposes before safer forms of lighting were available
  • As a chemical feedstock for polyethylene plastics and acrylics

How is Acetylene Produced and Stored?

  • Acetylene is manufactured by the partial combustion of methane (natural gas) or as a by-product in the ethylene stream from hydrocarbon cracking.
  • Pure acetylene can easily explode when in liquid form, solid form or while being pressurized.
  • To make it more stable, it is supplied and stored dissolved in acetone or dimethylformamide (DMF).
  • This mixture is placed into a gas cylinder containing a porous filling of agamassan.
  • This packaging makes acetylene safe to transport and use, given proper handling.

Acetylene Facts

  • Acetylene is the simplest alkyne hydrocarbon
  • Acetylene is colourless and odourless (in pure form)
  • Acetylene can have a noticeable garlic-like smell if it contains impurities, such as hints of arsine and phosphine.

The first virtual pipeline solution is LNG.

This regasification is achieved using a method involving heat exchangers – the two large grey units in accompanying picture.

After regasification, it reverts to and is used as natural gas.

This the same natural gas that is piped to homes and businesses around the country.

LNG is liquefied natural gas - methane

Simulated Natural Gas

The second virtual pipeline solution is simulated natural gas.
